Jan Bakker lived and worked in The Hague (1902-1904), Schiedam, De Werken and Sleeuwijk near Gorinchem until 1916.
Then he settled on 3 February 1916 in Voorburg. He was a student of the Academy for Visual Arts in The Hague, under the direction of Frits Jansen and also became advice from W.B. Tholen.
Water landscapes and the small towns on the big rivers were his favorite subjects. He also made creditable etchings. Bakker was a member of the societies' Pulchri Studio 'in The Hague and' St. Lucas' in Amsterdam.
