Caelen, Joseph Antonius Gerardus 1938-07-27 (Heerlen) Aquarellist, sculptor, collagist, graphic artist, pastelist, pentear, painter, draughtsman. Education: City Academy of Visual Arts Maastricht. Working in: Valkenburg aan de Geul, Eijsden (1969-1993), Spain, Austria, South-France. Experiencing the art of Jos Caelen is not stopping at the paint layer, but discovering the philosophy and soul of the maker under the skin of the painting. His process is a guided process, sometimes he wants to go outside, then again he doesn't want to see a person.
There are periods when he is receptive to the outside world, another time he wants to lock himself up in his studio to work on his paintings in complete seclusion, but one thing is certain: as an artist in every work he is engaged in an introspection of his spiritual life. The curious thing about questions about art is that one question overlaps with another, that there are no answers to be given, because each question raises another as every last painting is the starting point for another to breathe dead matter to life. 'A good painting is a collection of matter that, fitting in the primal form of our brain, refers to what is experienced in our minds as harmony and truth, apart from cultural backgrounds. And man elevates.'
