Shadow Portraits - Silhouette by Elliot Linder - Torquay England
Shadow Portraits by Elliot Linder - Torquay England The Pennyfarthing Galleries
Monsieur Etienne de Silhouette (1709-67) was the first exponent os the popular
Shadow-Portraits which bear his name.
Many later Artists attempted this character-revealing metho of portraiture.
Most found, however, that the apparent
simplicity of Silhouettes is deceptive, hiding the necessity for faultless draughtsmanship, a delicat: sense of design and tue rare ability to breathe life into simole black shapes.
In mol than two centuries, few silhouettists have produced work of high enough quality for their names to be remembered.
Their Profiles now commard extremely high prices.
Good Silhouettes are scarce. Many were discarded as " old fashioned " when the "splenoid New Photography" flooded Victorian mantelpieces with easily obtained portraits, and the art of the Silhouette was lost.
Today, people of taste are beginning to appreciate their delicate yet dramatic appeal, and their adaptability to all forms of interior decor (as evidenced by their widespread use on Television).
