'Jan' Luitzen de Vries
Amsterdam, 1960
Jan Luitzen de Vries completed a university study in Dutch and worked in business for several years, before he dedicated himself entirely to artistry as a self-taught. Visibly fascinated by comics and by the art of Matisse, Wesselmann and Lichtenstein, Vries describes his work as the naked lust for color and form.
Vries paintings are characterized by bright, almost fluorescent colors and sharp, enlarged images that penetrate the retina, as it were. The uncomplicated storyline makes his work accessible to everyone. The rising and setting suns, clouds, splashing waves and deserts form the landscape side of his work, but there are also nocturnal cityscapes, geometric views and stained glass mozane scenes.
De Vries' pop art translates images from comic strips into colossal canvases. His paintings are not literal enlargements. The “originals” used have not been emphatically adapted to their new task. These adjustments mainly have to do with changes that are necessary to keep the extremely large image self-evident. Kunstuitleen.nl has many original canvases and screen prints by Jan Luitzen de Vries in the collection.
