The Gathering - Bronze sculpture by Tjikkie Kreuger
This is a bronze sculpture by Dutch artist Tjikkie Kreuger. It depicts a group of abstracted figures standing closely together, evoking a sense of unity and communal strength. The figures are stylized with elongated forms and rounded heads, adding a sense of timelessness and universality to the piece.
The surface features a textured, irregular finish, enhanced by a patinated effect that adds depth and warmth to the bronze material. The patina varies in tone, ranging from dark bronze to subtle golden highlights, which gives the sculpture an organic and aged appearance. The group of figures is mounted on a polished black base, which provides a striking contrast to the earthy tones of the bronze.
Standing approximately 14 cm tall, this sculpture exemplifies Kreuger’s ability to capture human connection and togetherness through abstract and minimalist forms.
Tjikkie Kreuger
Tjitske Marie (Tjikkie) Kreuger (Leeuwarden, February 18, 1941 – Knegsel, January 4, 2017) was a Dutch sculptor. Tjikkie Kreuger was the daughter of Marinus Kreuger (1915-1945), a painter who also played the organ, and Aukje Goudberg (1920-2008). She studied fashion and textiles at the Vredeman de Vries Academy in Leeuwarden. Later she was taught in Nijmegen by the sculptors Ed van Teeseling and Charles Hammes. Kreuger mainly made bronze human figures, in which she was inspired by the African peoples and Egyptian art. She worked mainly in wax and in the early years also with clay. Although the plastics are figurative, they are not necessarily realistic, because Kreuger accentuated or omitted characteristics.
