Gouache Painting depicting classic cavalry soldiers on horseback in the Napoleon / Waterloo style. The work is signed and manufactured by Gerard Westermann (1880-1971) and appears to be dated 1920.
Westermann was born in Leeuwarden and left for Amsterdam for his education at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, where he was taught by J.H. Jurres and August Allebé. He was a painter, watercolorist, draftsman and illustrator and famous for his somewhat dreamy and romantic performances. His subjects were portraits, figures, horses, historical pieces and still lifes.
Westerman also worked under the pseudonym Johs. Labasky To get inspiration for his works, he undertook several trips to Friesland, Brabant, Limburg, France and Germany, among others. Between 1918 and 1945 he was a teacher at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam and was also a member of the Artists' Association Sint Lucas and Arti & Amicitiae.
