Carnaval parade - Semi-Erotic Photo series by Theo van der Vaart
Original photograph (from 80’s exhibition) on black board.
These photos were taken by Dutch Photographer Theo van der Vaart.
Some of these photographs have been part of an exhibition ‘Grafkieken’ that was on display in the art gallery Artesanias, Singel 29, Amsterdam over the past year. The photos on display (largely in color) formed a selection of the thousands of photos of graves and cemeteries the photographer has taken over the past twenty-five years in Europe and North, Central and South America.
“Walking over an existing graveyard, I sometimes imagine a cemetery that will never become a reality. Although I am coming here for the first time, I am fully known at this imaginary cemetery. There are only friends and family members. In a dream from a Bergman movie, I walk past the graves and stand still. I see how old they have become, I know what is unfinished and who has broken up. I read the degree of neglect, I chuckle at an epitaph.”
