The copper engraving represents the surrender of the Austrian troops after the six-month siege of Mantua by the French, in 1797. The theme, addressed through the close-up images of the losing troops in the act of abandoning the battlefield , leaves the view of Mantua in the background, given back to us in summary and purely indicative terms: the fulcrum of the observer's attention - alongside the figures of wounded or exhausted soldiers - also resides in moments of particular emotional closeness between the surrendering soldiers and some local civilians.

Below the title, five lines of writing in French describe the phases of the siege, the long Austrian resistance and the terms of the surrender, and exalt the value of the French armies.
